The ADO General Secretariat, ADOGS, held its periodic meeting on 20/6/2020 as part of its working agenda, which included discussions on various topics: organizational, intellectuals, and political aspects. During the meeting members of the ADOGS reviewed all reports submitted by the branches and of the special offices, and endorsed the reports submitted by the ADO’s Executive Committee, ADOEC. And approved a working plan for the future, in which it emphasized energizing the role of both women and men members in all organizational aspects and improve their expertise, performance, and quality that would strengthen the role of ADO among the Assyrian people and also on the Syrian theater.
In this context, the ADOGS addressed the efforts of ADO leadership toward the Assyrian parties and Organizations to reach an understanding and improved relations, especially having a unified stance regarding the New Constitution in which the rights and expectations of all Syrians Entities are realized and protected.
ADOGS also reviewed the efforts made by the ADO within the internationally recognized Syrian Opposition framework and its role to mobilize the Syrian national players into a solid alliance to participate and achieve Syrian aspired democratic changes in the country. In this aspect, it was agreed to continue the efforts and stressed the importance to preserve the integrity and independence of the Syrian negotiating team, apart from, regional and international influences and disagreements; in order, to fulfill its responsibility in representing all Syrians to achieve their aspirations, in sharing the future benefit.
On the political aspects, the ADOGS reviewed the political situations in Syria in light of the new developments in the country, and the position of the government and their allies with continued policies and familiar tactics, pertinent to lack of commitment to implement and undermine a political solution based on UN resolution 2254. The regime is still determined, along with some of its allies, to maintain security and military approach to deal with the crisis in Syria, despite the failure of this method, in which it led the country into destruction. The regime has applied the same measures in dealing with recent peaceful demonstrations in Swaida and at other Syrian cities, that came out in protest against the deteriorating economy, living conditions, state repression, and detentions without trials.
The ADOGS expressed its concerns about the negative impacts of the penalties implied by the Caesar Law concerning the protection of civilian, that came into effect a few days ago, and also showed reservation regarding the safeguard and the negative effect of the Law on the civilians.
The ADOGS considers the main reason for the suffering of Syrians is the unjust war waged by the regime against its people; and the killing and displacement of millions, as well as, the destruction of the infrastructure, and depletion of resources to finance the war effort. The collapse of the Syrian pound, low exchange rate, and low purchasing power has plunged the Syrians, more than ever, into poverty; at present 80% of the people live under the poverty level.
Caesar Law and whatever suffering it may cause or bring to the Syrian people; it still has a window of opportunity to deal positively with the Syrian crisis; it maintains political and economical pressure on the regime and its allies to stop their campaign that is been going on for ten years, and force them to enter into a political settlement under the auspices of the UN. It also provides measurements or articles to stop the sanctions, in case the regime and its allies showed readiness and a commitment towards a political settlement, release of political prisoners, allows humanitarian aids to enter the country, the voluntary and safe return of displaced people and refugees to their homes, and seriously commits itself to a comprehensive ceasefire throughout the country.
The situation in Syria has reached an unbearable level and any further delays in launching a political settlement will exacerbate the suffering of the Syrian people. Therefore, we (the ADO) affirm our position by calling on all countries involved in the Syrian conflict to begin and accelerate the initiative for a political process to take place under UN supervision. Thus allowing free and fair elections, and implementation of a political transition that the Syrian peoples are looking for.
ADOGS also discussed in depth the inter Kurdish dialogue and its importance in managing the Kurdish affairs of Syria and stressed that any improvement of relations among the Syrians National Entities is a positive step and ought to be encouraged and supported if it is based on principles of partnership and integration of all Syrians in the (NE) region with focused intentions on consolidating peace among the inhabitants, strengthening stability, and promoting values of coexistence. The ADOGS expressed that this dialogue is an important step in the right direction, as well as, significant toward uniting the efforts of the Syrian Opposition to achieve a transition to a democratic system in the country.
