Syria and Iran on Monday officially confirmed their participation in Thursday’s meeting here of Iraq’s neighbours, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Sharaa told his Jordanian counterpart Hani Mulki in a telephone call that he is to head his country’s delegation to the conference.
Iran’s delegation, meanwhile, will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister for International and Legal Affairs Ghulam Ali Khoshro. Mulki said that in addition to the Iraqi issue, participants will discuss bilateral ties. Along with Iraq’s neighbours, Egypt, Bahrain and UN special envoy Ashraf Qazi will also take part in the event.
In a related development, Mulki and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Gheit discussed over the phone issues to be addressed during the meeting. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rajab Sukayri said officials from the participating countries will meet Wednesday to discuss the one-day conference’s agenda and a proposed final communiqu?.
AFP said Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, currently visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories, was expected to travel to Amman to attend the conference.
