Press release about Turkich Berlin manifestation

Translated from the Turkish original by EasternStar News Agency

A large Turkish manifestation was planned in Berlin for the coming weekend, 18 ? 19 March 2006, under the watchword ?Bring the flag and come to Berlin?. The manifestation, which was subsidized by the Turkish government, has now been stopped by the Berlin Police authority. What is most gratifying is not the prohibition of the manifestation itself, but the stated cause for the prohibition.

The Police authority in Berlin has stopped the manifestation on the grounds that it would be a desecration to the memory of all the people killed during the genocide in 1915.

The above means a major setback for Turkish chauvinists such as Rauf Denktas, Suleyman Demirel och Dogu Perincek, which in turn can be expected to lift Turkish chauvinism to new heights in the coming few weeks.

When I personally, and our organizations, heard of the manifestation, which was to be organized to celebrate the memory of Talat Pasha (the Turkish equivalent of Hitler) and aiming at strengthening the Turkish denial of the genocide, we began to act on a broad front to try to stop it. The recent prohibition of the manifestation can be seen as a result of these organized reactions.

The manifestation would be a gross insult to all those who fell victim to the genocide, Seyfo, in 1915. We have now stopped this insult. But the deniers will not give up so easily. Similar activities should be expected in the near future. Our job is therfore to be constantly vigilant. A lot of work still remains in the Seyfo issue.?

Kind regards
