Murder of Swedish Assyrian Researcher Raises Concerns in the Netherlands

The Hague – AINA — The murder of Assyrian researcher Fuat Deniz last week in Sweden (AINA 12-13-2007) has raised concerns among members of the Dutch government.

In today’s parliament session Mr. Omtzigt, a member of parliament representing the Christian Democratic Party (CDA) party, submitted three questions to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

1- Did you take cognizance of the horrible murder on the Swedish scientist of Turkish origin, Fuat Deniz, who did research on, among other things, the murder on Syriac-Orthodox people in Turkey in 1914/1915. (Nederlands Dagblad, ‘Genocide onderzoeker vermoord in Zweden’ 15 december 2007).
2- Do you share the concern of the CDA party about the possibility that the murder may have a political motive, concerning the way the murder took place?
3- Are people in the Netherlands that conduct similar research also threatened? If so, what are you doing about it?

According to a report by DPA, the murder of Fuat Deniz has raised fears that he was killed over his research that focused on the Turkish genocide of Assyrians in World War One, in which 750,000 Assyrians were killed.
