Assyrian Genocide May Be Taught in Stockholm Schools

Stockholm – AIN — Schools in Stockholm might soon become the first in the world to teach the Assyrian (also known as Chaldean and Syriac) genocide in history lessons.

The decision to make this happen was taken during the annual meeting of the Social democratic district of Stockholm on the 22 of April. The motion to teach the Assyrian genocide was submitted by a group of young Assyrian members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Stockholm, and who are active in the pursuit of an acknowledgment of the deaths of 750,000 (75%) Assyrians during WWI at the hands of Turks and Kurds.

The initial request was to have Seyfo, as the Assyrian genocide is called, officially acknowledged and taught in schools. But the annual meeting could not agree on officially recognizing Seyfo as genocide. As a result, the social democratic district in Stockholm may teach about the genocide but not recognize it as such.

A future committee responsible for international issues will investigate the proposal to have Seyfo officially recognized as genocide.
