Assyrian Culture on Show in Australia

Fairfield, Australia – fairfieldadvance — The city’s Assyrian community will be celebrating in October, with a festival of Middle Eastern food and entertainment set for the long weekend.

A group of friends from Fairfield is organising the first Assyrian-Australian Convention, in the hope of it becoming an annual event.

As well as food and entertainment, the four-day convention will provide a business expo and a beauty pageant at the York Fairmont Resort in Leura from October 3-6.

Assyrian performers Linda George, Ashur Bet Sargis and Sargon Gabriel will make special appearances.

Committee member Andy Isho said establishing the Assyrian-Australian Convention had been a long-standing aspiration among the organising committee. “I encourage the entire Assyrian community to attend and enjoy the carnival atmosphere, dance parties, cultural activities and the farewell and thank you picnic and concert organised as the finale,” he said.

“Depending on the success and outcome of the convention, and the activities that follow, a portion of the proceeds will be donated back to the local Assyrian churches … to assist with their work in helping needy Assyrians worldwide.”
