The Syrian regime insists on holding presidential elections, on May 26, with the same means and methods that it has been practicing for decades against the will of the Syrian people, and with disregard to any national, political, and moral consideration toward the tragedy that is currently taking place in Syrian homeland, for the last ten years, ignoring the rights of the Syrians people to achieve democratic changes, that would take the country out of its deadlock disastrous conditions, and reshape the identity and character of Syrian State according to new fundamentals: citizenship, the rule of law, separation of powers, full protection of rights for all Syrian people, and respect for human rights.
At a time when the Syrian territory is divided among many de facto powers, and the death of thousands of Syrians in detention centers against their will and without trials, and the presence of thousands of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons that their fate is unknown, the displacement of millions of Syrians at home and abroad, demographic changes occurring in more than one region, and the presence of direct and indirect occupations of Syrian land; the regime continues to deny all these facts and the disastrous past ten years and is determined to implement a process of exclusion, politically and socially, as well as denying other Syrian nationalities of their rights, in an attempt to preserve itself and hold on power.
We, the signatories of this statement, reject this ploy called “presidential elections” and its outcome. We condemn all, local and external forces, that agree to the outcome of the elections, and we adhere to UN Resolution 2254, which endorses the process of democratic political transition under a new constitution, and we demand, that our people not give in to this ploy that mocks them and ignore their miserable reality in which the current economic conditions have forced more than 90% of the people below the poverty level. The fact is, the elections are carried out forcibly by the state security apparatus, in order, for the regime to survive and have firm control over the society and state institutions.
