Final Declaration of the General Assembly of the ADO (European Section)

Due to these events the Assyrian Democratic Organization recognized the importance of this phase and based on its lasting experience covering many decades of political work as well as its solid sense of national responsibility, it is contributing to this developments by intensified activities in the regional and national field.

The decision of the 10th General Assembly of the ADO in August 2003 to conduct its political activity publicly was initiated by the preparation and participation in the Chaldean–Syrian–Assyrian Conference in Bagdad (October 2003) and was confirmed by numerous meetings with Assyrian and other political groups and parties. An official visiting tour of the members of the Political Board took place in January and February in Europe this year and confirmed that our people stand to their culture and their national affiliation and maintain strong contacts to the homeland.

The 7th General Assembly of the European Section of the ADO took place on January 17th and 18th, 2004 in the presence of members of the Political Board, the European and regional sections.

During the first day of the meeting lectures and analyses along with discussions were held on the following topics:

  • The situation of our people in the homeland (Iraq, Syria, Turkey) after the 10th General Assembly of the ADO and the conference in Bagdad.

  • The political work in the Diaspora and especially Europe.

  • The youth perspective and the political work in Europe.

  • Internal restructuring within the ADO, in order to improve coordination between homeland and Diaspora.

On the second day of the meeting the reports of the individual European sections and committees were presented and discussed. A framework for the future work was defined and formulated for the next executive committee.

In an open and pleasant atmosphere and by a democratic election the Executive Committee of the European Section was elected with one new chairman as well as two delegated for the Coordinating Committee of the foreign sections.

The current events after the Iraq War proofed that many questions and requirements were raised to the Assyrian national movement that it was not prepared for to this extent. With this background it is necessary that our political work and related coordination of activities needs to be strengthened for both, externally and internally for our people.

The objective to define our rights in an Iraqi constitution has to be based on the success reached so far. On this basis the demands are to be extended also for other parts of the homeland such as Syria and Turkey. The realization of our goals is possible by bypassing of internal diversities of opinions, the cooperation and coordination of activities with other parties of our nation as well as communication to political organizations of the homeland and the peoples of the region.
