Dear graduates and students of the Suryoye people,

We are happy to invite you to the 4th symposium “Suryoye l-Suryoye”, a multidisciplinary conference in Stockholm, Sweden, from October 3–5, 2008, pursuing questions around linguistic, religious, and historical perspectives, among others, on Suryoyo culture. The conference is arranged by Fundatio Nisibenensis – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Aramäischer Studien in cooperation with the Department of Oriental Studies of Friedrich- Alexander University, Erlangen.
This year, as a part of the 4th Symposium “Suryoye l-Suryoye” the Helga-Anschütz-Award will be granted for the first time. (see description below.)

The Symposium is taking place from October 3rd – 5th 2008, in Hageberg, Erik Dahlbergsväg 60, Södertälje near Stockholm/ Sweden

The aim of this conference is to offer graduates and advanced undergraduates of the Suryoye people the opportunity of discussing their own history, religion, culture and language within the setting of an academic meeting, which is unique in its kind worldwide amongst Suryoye.

What do scientific researchers know about the following issues: processes of acculturation of the Suryoyo community in countries of immigration, religious and ethnic worldview and identity, gender and generational relations, Syriac theology, iconography and Syriac church history, social and psychological health issues among Suryoye migrants, and linguistic prospects in the countries of origin and in the diaspora.

We would be happy to welcome you to this Symposium as lecturer or as participant. The topics of the lectures should be related to the following four areas:

1. Political situation as minority in the native countries
2. Identity in the Diaspora
3. Language, History and Culture
4. Church and Religion

A total of 20 lectures (each lasting 20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion) are scheduled. Experts of all social and political groups of our people are invited to participate. Apart from Swedish, also English and Aramaic are permitted as means of communication during the conference. The latter ones are intended for participants lacking the Swedish language due to their residence in a different country.

REGISTRATION:
Only serious and academic lectures will be accepted. In order to maintain the academic standard of the congress, all delivered lectures will be evaluated by the Academic Committee of the Fundatio Nisibinensis. The Symposium begins on Friday, October 3rd, 2008, at 3 o’clock p.m. and ends on the following Sunday after lunch. An amount of 75 € is charged for participation at the symposium including attendance and catering. Please bear in mind to find accommodation.

We expect your registration for lectures to be delivered via email at the latest by the

30th of August 2008.

For all other participants the period of registration lasts until

15th of Sepember 2008.

Please note that registrations received after 30th August 2008 will not be considered. The final program will be sent at the beginning of September 2008. Please note: For the designation of our people only the term Suryoyo/e will be accepted.

Helga-Anschütz-Award 2008

The Helga-Anschütz-Foundation announces the first Helga-Anschütz-Award This year,


as one part of the 4th Symposium “Suryoye l-Suryoye” of the Fundatio Nisibinensis – Foundation for Promoting Aramaen Studies, October 3-5, 2008 in Södertälje, Sweden and for the first time the Helga-Anschütz-Award will be granted.

The award is announced by the recently established Helga-Anschütz-Foundation in memory of the multiple commitment of the specialist in Middle Eastern Christianity Dr. Helga Anschütz for the Suryoye in a two-year cycle. It appreciates outstanding scientific and artistic works of recent times. These works should inspire the reinvolvement with history, language and culture of the Suryoye and contribute to their deep understanding. The Helga-Anschütz-Award is endowed with 2.000 Euros and can be granted to up to maximal two candidates – in this case the amount will be shared.

Please note the following application process:
Scientific or artistic works can be recommended by the author himself as well as by a third person. Consideration will be given only to works already published. The application must be attached by the curriculum vitae. The selection of award winners is made by the Executive Board of the Helga-Anschütz-Foundation.
