{"id":69,"date":"2004-12-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-12-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-10-01T20:26:49","modified_gmt":"2010-10-01T20:26:49","slug":"egyptian-coptic-protesters-freed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ado-world.com\/en\/egyptian-coptic-protesters-freed\/","title":{"rendered":"Egyptian Coptic protesters freed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><BR><br \/>\n<P dir=rtl style=\"DIRECTION: rtl; LINE-HEIGHT: 14pt; unicode-bidi: embed; TEXT-ALIGN: left; mso-line-height-rule: exactly\"><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: Arial; color: #4900DC\"><br \/>\nCairo &#8211; BBC<BR><br \/>\n<\/SPAN><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; color: black\"><\/p>\n<p>Thirteen Egyptian Coptic Christians detained after clashes with police have been released on humanitarian grounds, the prosecutor-general said.<br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\n<img src=http:\/\/www.ado-world.com\/en\/images\/news\/baba-shinoda-02.jpg align=right><\/p>\n<p><BR><\/p>\n<p>Maher Abdel Wahed told reporters he had extended the detention of 21 others pending further investigations. <BR>Policemen were injured when stones were hurled by protesters who had occupied the main Coptic cathedral in Cairo earlier this month.<br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\nTensions between Christians and Muslims in Egypt have flared in recent weeks. <BR><br \/>\nThe protests began after rumours spread that a priest&#8217;s wife, Wafa Constantine, had been abducted and forced to convert to Islam.<br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\nGovernment officials had said Mrs Constantine, 48, wanted to convert to Islam but was being prevented from doing so by her family. <BR>The clashes at the cathedral ended when protesters were told that Mrs Constantine was back under the Church&#8217;s protection.<br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\nLast week, Egypt&#8217;s prosecutor-general said that Mrs Constantine had gone to police saying she wanted to change her religion, but had decided to remain a Christian after meeting Church officials.<br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\n<img src=http:\/\/www.ado-world.com\/en\/images\/news\/coptic-protest.jpg align=right><\/p>\n<p><BR><br \/>\n<b>Calm<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\nThe violence has prompted the Coptic Christian pope, Shenouda III, to go into seclusion at a monastery in protest at the treatment of Copts.<br \/>\n<BR>Also this month, police said they had arrested 25 people after sectarian violence erupted in the Upper Egyptian village of Munqateen.<br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\nPolice were reported to be keeping Muslims and Christians apart after three Christian-owned shops and homes were attacked and police cars were wrecked. <BR><br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\nRelations between the authorities and the Coptic minority &#8211; which makes up 5-10% of Egypt&#8217;s population &#8211; are generally calm. <BR>Copts remained the majority in Egypt for centuries after the 7th Century conquest of the country by Muslim armies.<br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\n<BR><br \/>\nIn the modern age, they complain of discrimination in the workplace, restrictions on church construction and periodic fears that Christians are being forced to convert by Islamic extremists.<br \/>\n<\/SPAN><\/P><\/p>\n<p><BR><br \/>\n<P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: left\" align=left><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"font-size: 8pt; font-family: Arial; color: black\"><br \/>\n23-12-2004 <\/SPAN><BR><br \/>\n<SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: #4900dc; FONT-FAMILY: 'Estrangelo Edessa'\">&#1826;&#1815;&#1834;&#1821;&#1808; <\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cairo &#8211; BBC Thirteen Egyptian Coptic Christians detained after clashes with police have been released on humanitarian grounds, the prosecutor-general said.
