{"id":223,"date":"2005-07-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2010-10-01T20:26:49","modified_gmt":"2010-10-01T20:26:49","slug":"lebanese-calls-for-direct-u-s-hizbollah-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ado-world.com\/en\/lebanese-calls-for-direct-u-s-hizbollah-dialogue\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanese calls for direct U.S.-Hizbollah dialogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P class=MsoNormal style=\"MARGIN: 4.5pt 0cm 0pt 7.5pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 125%\"><SPAN lang=EN-GB style=\"FONT-SIZE: 10pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 125%; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB\"><BR><BR><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags\" \/><st1:City w:st=\"on\"><SPAN style=\"COLOR: #3200c8\">BEIRUT<\/SPAN><\/st1:City><SPAN style=\"COLOR: #3200c8\">&#8211; Reuters<BR><\/SPAN>A Lebanese minister close to Hizbollah has urged the <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> to take the group off its &#8220;terror list&#8221; and seek a way to start a dialogue with its leaders. &#8220;I call on the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> to change its stance toward Hizbollah and I support direct dialogue between the two sides to that effect,&#8221; Labour Minister Trad Hamadeh told Reuters in an interview on Friday night. <BR><BR>Hamadeh, who held talks with <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> officials in <st1:State w:st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:State> earlier this year, was described this month by a <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> diplomatic source as a &#8220;channel of communication&#8221; between the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and the Shi&#8217;ite Muslim group. &#8220;Describing me as a channel of communication is deceptive &#8230; I am a minister of <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Lebanon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, not a messenger,&#8221; Hamadeh said. &#8220;The talks I had were part of dialogue aimed at safeguarding the interests of my country.&#8221; <BR><BR>He said direct communication between Hizbollah and Washington would be more productive than contact through intermediaries. &#8220;The diplomacy of shutting doors and entering through windows is not a dynamic one. It lacks the capacity, efficiency and the competence needed to produce results,&#8221; Hamadeh said. Hamadeh, who has no official rank within pro-Syria Hizbollah, kept his post in a new government line-up announced on Tuesday, three months after <st1:City w:st=\"on\">Damascus<\/st1:City> withdrew its forces from <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Lebanon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> after nearly 30 years. <BR><BR>Hizbollah was represented in the cabinet for the first time after the party won 14 seats in parliament in last month&#8217;s elections. Hamadeh said his meetings with <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> officials including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Elizabeth Dibble, took place with Hizbollah&#8217;s blessing. &#8220;I met with Dibble but not before discussing it with the parliamentary bloc that supported and named me (to the government),&#8221; he said. <BR><BR><B><SPAN style=\"COLOR: #3200c8\">DISARMAMENT<BR><\/SPAN><\/B>Hizbollah, accused by the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region> of receiving financial and weapons support from <st1:City w:st=\"on\">Damascus<\/st1:City> and <st1:City w:st=\"on\">Tehran<\/st1:City>, played a key role in ending <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Israel<\/st1:country-region>&#8216;s 22-year occupation of southern <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Lebanon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and its guerrillas still clash sporadically with Israeli forces. <BR><BR><SPAN style=\"COLOR: black\">Calls for its disarmament in line with a U.N. resolution which also demanded <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Syria<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>&#8216;s withdrawal intensified after the killing of former Lebanese premier Rafik al-Hariri in February. Hizbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah has said the group would not lay down its arms as long as &#8220;<st1:country-region w:st=\"on\">Israel<\/st1:country-region> threatened <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Lebanon<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>&#8221; but agreed to discuss the fate of its weapons with various Lebanese factions. <BR><BR>&#8220;Hizbollah is committed to the results of any national dialogue that takes place, providing it is free of interference from Arab countries, Europe or <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>,&#8221; Hamadeh said. Hizbollah, whose support runs deep in Lebanon&#8217;s Shi&#8217;ite Muslim community, has had representatives in parliament since 1992 and runs a wide network of social and charity services. The group&#8217;s strong showing in the elections has proven a dilemma for the <st1:country-region w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, which touts June&#8217;s polls as a victory in its drive for democracy in the region. <BR><BR><st1:State w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:State> has held out the prospect of legitimacy for the group if it abandons arms and transforms into a political party. <SPAN style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&nbsp;<\/SPAN>&#8220;Hizbollah has its own constituency, institutions, representatives in parliament and ministers in the government. The argument of turning into a political party does not stand.
