<\/SPAN>The Iraqi special tribunal responsible for trying Saddam Hussein has been questioning him about allegations relating to the oppression of Kurds.

In a tape aired by Al-Arabiya TV, Saddam Hussein is seen being quizzed about the alleged expropriation of property from a group of Shia Kurds. The former Iraqi leader is seen responding sharply to questioning. It comes four days after the tribunal laid its first formal charge against him, involving the killing of Shias.

That case relates to the killing of 140 people in a village north of Baghdad<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> in 1982, following a failed assassination attempt on Saddam Hussein. It is thought the former president could stand trial in early September.

He is heard attacking the recently-elected transitional government, saying it was appointed by the Americans.
“I am detained and this is a game,” he said.

He also argued that he should have freer access to his lawyers. The judge is heard to say that the court is fair and independent.

The Iraqi government has said Saddam Hussein will face only 12 charges when he goes on trial, despite a possible 500 cases against him.
